Famagusta is the most scary abandoned place in the world. The island nation of Cyprus develop the city after gaining independence in 1960. By the early 1970s, Famagusta’s neighborhood of Varosha was teeming with wealthy tourists. It was even said to be the favorite vacation destination for celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Brigitte Bardot.
But that all changed on July 20th of 1974 when Turkey threatened to invade. In response, Varosha was promptly abandoned. By August, the Turks had taken control of Famagusta, and quickly fenced off Varosha.
For years, it sat as an untouched testament to the 1970s; so untouched that many restaurant tables were still set for breakfast. Under guard by Turkish troops. Greek Cypriots continued to appeal to the UN to return the land to Cyprus. Yet, those hopes were dashed in late 2020 when the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus began to re-open Varosha. It has now begun to repopulate it with Turkish citizens.
