In this video Heimler explores the motives for European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries. Portugal was first to try to find a sea route to Asia and did so by sailing around Africa, establishing a trading post empire as they went. They were able to gain a foothold because they made use of new maritime technologies like caravels, and appropriated inherited technologies like the astrolabe and the stern post rudder.

After the completion of the Iberian conquest, Spain quickly sought out a sea route to Asia as well. The Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, sponsored an Italian sailor named Christopher Columbus to sail west across the Atlantic. Columbus found a route not to Asia, but to the Americas.

At that, a great reordering of the world began, known as the Columbian Exchange.
