The railway is about 750 kilometers long and runs from Addis Ababa to Djibouti City. It is the first transnational electric standard-gauge railway in East Africa and began commercial operations in 2018. More than 2,500 passenger trips and more than 7,000 cargo trips have been made along the railway, generating a revenue of 10 billion Birr, or nearly 200 million U.S. dollars.
