(3 Sep 2018) BELGIAN COURT DELAYS EXTRADITION DECISION ON SPANISH RAPPER VALTONYC
A Belgium court will decide on September 17 whether or not Spanish rapper Valtonyc should be sent back to Spain where he was sentenced to prison for lyrics that praised terror groups and insulted the royal family.
Following a hearing on Monday (3 SEPT. 2018)at Palace of Justice, Valtonyc's lawyer Simon Bekaert said that the judge decided to give his judgment on September 17.
Valtonyc is the artistic name of Jose Miguel Arenas, a 24-year-old rap singer and composer from Palma de Mallorca who fled to Belgium in May to escape a 3 ½-year prison sentence for songs in which he praised terror groups, threatened a Spanish politician with violence and insulted the royal family.
Spanish authorities issued an arrest warrant immediately after, demanding his extradition.
During the trials, Spanish courts ejected Arenas' argument that the point of rap lyrics is to be provocative and that should be protected by free speech laws.
Following Monday's hearing, Bekaert said he was confident that the extradition will not happen.
