Healing With Acupuncture with Dr. Mark Carney: Acupuncture & Lung Conditions

Hi, I'm Dr. Mark Carney. I'm a naturopathic doctor and an acupuncturist with a family practice in Denver, Colorado called Your Healing Place. People often ask, "What is acupuncture?"

Acupuncture is one part of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Acupuncture is based on the concept of Qi and Qi means energy. The Qi is flowing through our body in rivers that are called meridians in Chinese medicine.

Basically, what acupuncture is doing is inserting needles at different points of these meridians to flip open and closed valves to regulate the flow of the energy of the Qi. The acupuncture needles are so tiny that they are bendable. They are almost the thickness of a human hair. So that's acupuncture.

Let's talk about lung-related conditions. Some of the most common lung conditions are grouped under the diagnosis COPD, which stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Examples would be asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. When we talk about coughing, the three most common causes for coughing would be asthma, allergies and post-nasal drip. Besides coughing, other common lung symptoms would be wheezing, chest tightness or just shortness of breath.

The health of our lungs is determined in part by:

• Our exercise
• Our genetics
• Our lifestyle—this is where smoking enters the picture
• Our careers—the classic example being farmer's lung and coal miner's lung
• Our diet, with various allergies that we may have

In my experience, acupuncture can provide a phenomenal benefit for people who have lung conditions by opening up the air passage ways, decreasing the stress and the overall burden of inflammation in the body. We use acupuncture points all throughout the body, not just points that are located over the lungs, to balance out these meridians.
