The New Defender 4x4 is the newest in the range to get a plug-in hybrid model under the 'P400e' badge, and it may well just be the most sensible of choices. Mainly if you're more of a townie Land Rover buyer. Appropriately the Defender P400e uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine coupled to an electric motor and 19.2kWh battery for an overall output of 398bhp and an effective 472lb-ft torque. That electric backing allows for an impressive 5.6sec 0-62mph time – not far off the arriving Defender V8 – and a claimed e-range of 27 miles. Land Rover states 85.3mpg as its best fuel economy number and, obviously, the P400e is the Defender with the least emissions.
Nothing like the Evoque P300e where the engine drives the front and the e-motor drives the rear axle, the Defender's e-motor is slot in between the engine and the gearbox. The Defender's use of e-power is such as to not spoil the off-road capabilities.
The P400e is also one of the small numbers of PHEVs with fast 50kW charging capacity which allows the Defender's battery to be topped up to 80 percent in half an hour, or full in around two.
Land Rover states only the Defender 110 will benefit from the PHEV option – the 90's platform is too short to fit in the battery pack. Usefulness has hardly suffered from the hybrid switch in the 110. Cargo space, a 'regular' 110 benefits from 1075 liters, while the P400e has a volume of 853 liters. Anyway, though, you can still tow up to 3000kg and still spec a six-seat option.
from the cabin, there are very few cues you're in a hybrid. The digital dials include power and charge meters as well as a standard rev counter, there's an EV mode control on the center console and an info screen within the infotainment. It still feels like a Defender from where you're sat, with stuffed seats and a wholly practical yet brilliantly designed interior. Storage place everywhere, strong materials balanced by soft-touch padded areas and exposed rivets. Dashing around on e-power alone may feel unfamiliar at first, but you get used to the extra refinement at low speeds that electric power offers on such a swanky 4x4, drifting around chocolate-box villages like a saint.
When you want to be naughty, that e-power certainly aids performance – despite this Defender weighing in at a hefty 2.5 tonnes dry, the extra torque from the electric motor is a timely bonus. Because the e-motor is before the gearbox, you still feel gear changes in e-mode – it also requires you to wait for the gearbox to engage a gear when you floor the go pedal; no immediate e-torque here from a standing start, but it makes up for it after cogs have been changed. Once you're silent running, you do tend to note wind noise more than when the engine is on – mostly over the door mirrors.
Does the hybrid Defender drive differently? Well no! the extra weight hasn't altered the Defender's sweet-handling character one bit The steering is astonishingly direct for such a large, hefty vehicle and the ride still stomps a fine balance comfortable and clumpy.
Land Rover Defender P400e plug-in hybrid: our verdict
It's very much the no-nonsense and common-sense choice of Defender, chiefly for those townies who want a Defender more for its status and levelheadedness on short commutes to work.
The slick and juicy straight-six diesels will your heart a little more than the PHEV and allow you a lower entry price into Defender ownership, but the P400e is one of Land Rover's most win over hybrids yet merely because you can by a long shot achieve better fuel economy than any non-electrified providing you have the resource to regularly charge.
