Here's a cheery little number for Easter.

Often, I learn (and now record) songs for my own benefit, challenge and amusement. This is one of those songs.

I've got a few odd-ball covers on my desk top that I'll probably never post but was suddenly struck by the thought that, today, this song is slightly relevant; it being Easter and all.

Before I ever thought about playing bass, the first 2 albums I became obsessed with were this one, the "Jesus Christ Superstar" album, and the soundtrack to the movie "Tommy". I literally wore out copies of both of those records. Looking back, I distinctly remember being drawn to the sound of the bass. On both works, the bass is very prominent, busy and melodic, but until now, I'd never really learned a song off of either, probably because, this album especially, is very John Paul Jones-ish to my ears.

JCS was written and recorded as a "rock opera" in 1970 by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was very controversial at the time and even banned by the BBC on the grounds that it was "sacrilegious". Even greater controversy followed when it became a play.

A few other notes on JCS:
It was the first time I'd ever heard Ian Gillan sing and think it's one of his greatest works.
I've seen the play a half dozen times.
I think the album is superior to the movie soundtrack.
Wikipedia credits Allan Spenner as having played bass on the album along with Jeff Clyne, Peter Morgan, Alan Weighall, but only those three are credited on the liner notes of the CD/album.
JCS is one of the few CD's I keep in my car.
