Saudi Arabia might soon emerge as a potential buyer of the Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets, as reports suggest that the Trump administration is considering a sale of as many as 48 aircraft to the nation.

The Saudi pitch has set the alarm bells ringing in the Pentagon.

A Pentagon intelligence document has reportedly raised concerns over Saudi Arabia's bid to buy F-35 jets from the United States, warning that China could acquire the aircraft's technology if the sale proceeds.

Selling the warplane to Saudi Arabia would also be a significant policy shift, with Washington previously being unwilling to export F-35 to Arab states in the region, for fear of upsetting the strategic balance in relation to Israel.
