Kashmir has always witnessed a large influx of migrant workers who come to the Valley in search of livelihood. However, according to a report released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy in April, the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir stood at a staggering 23 per cent.

Migrant labourers say they can feel the impact of shrinking jobs. On the contrary, the government's employment department claims that the CMIE report does not accurately reflect the real situation. They claim that there is no employment crisis in the Union Territory.
