In an eye-catching initiative to tackle Australia’s pressing food waste issue, DASH Water has partnered with local farmers Darren and Tarn Hayes to creatively alter the iconic Big Strawberry in Victoria. This transformation aims to spotlight the potential of 'ugly' fruits and vegetables, which despite their imperfections, are perfectly edible and delicious.
Annually, Australia discards 2.4 billion kilograms of these misshapen, but equally nutritious, produce directly into landfills, representing a significant waste of resources and effort【1】. Recognizing this, DASH Water has committed itself to champion the use of these wonky fruits in its products, promoting sustainability and reducing food waste on a national scale.
"We’re proud to use business as a force of good and are excited to partner with The Big Strawberry to create the biggest wonky strawberry anyone has ever seen, and in Australia of all places, surrounded by great big things,” said Jack Scott, Co-Founder of DASH Water. Born into a family of farmers, Scott has seen firsthand the impacts of food wastage and has been a passionate advocate for using misfit produce.
The Big Strawberry, located at 7034 Goulburn Valley Highway, Koonoomoo, Victoria, has been 'wonkified' by DASH Water in this unique collaboration. From 9 AM on Saturday, 20 April to 3 PM on Sunday, 21 April, the site will not only serve as a quirky landmark but also as an educational hub about food waste. Visitors can enjoy free samples of DASH Water’s healthy, sparkling spring water, infused with real Aussie wonky fruit.
“We couldn’t be happier to collaborate with DASH Water to bring attention to Australia’s big food waste problem. We understand that fruit in all shapes, sizes, and forms are beautiful and more importantly delicious, despite what supermarkets are telling us. Just because a piece of fruit and veg isn’t perfectly symmetrical, doesn’t mean it needs to go straight to landfill,” explained Tarn Hayes, Co-Owner of The Big Strawberry and a dedicated strawberry farmer.
