He believes a precious lady like Portia belongs in a golden setting, but he opens it to find a skull and a message warning him that outward appearances can be deceiving.

The second suitor, the Prince of Arragon, is a proud man who refuses to choose the gold casket because he does not want to be like the common crowd. Instead, he selects the silver casket, which promises that the chooser will get as much as he deserves. He believes he is very worthy, but when he opens the box, he finds a picture of a blinking idiot. The message calls him a fool for being so arrogant, and he leaves in shame. Finally, a young man named Bassanio arrives to take the test, and Portia nervously hopes he succeeds because she already loves him.

Bassanio looks at the caskets and decides not to trust the flashy look of the gold or the silver. He realizes that many bad things in the world, like lies or cowardice, are often hidden behind a beautiful or tough appearance. He chooses the humble lead casket, which warns that he must give and risk everything he has. This turns out to be the correct choice, and he finds Portia's portrait inside. The couple is overjoyed, and Portia gives Bassanio a ring as a symbol of their union, which he promises to wear forever.
