The United Kingdom, France, Germany, have threatened to enact a punishing clause of a mostly defunct 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal and impose 'snapback' sanctions on Iran. The signatories of the deal lifted international sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran agreeing to scale back its nuclear activities. Yet in 2018 the US pulled out of the agreement, calling it a ‘one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made’. Washington re-introduced sanctions, devastating much of the Iranian economy. Tehran retaliated back by stepping up its uranium enrichment capacity. Iran is now said to have more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 per cent.
