Let’s learn how to identify Granite. Granite is an igneous rock made by volcanoes. Identifying granite rocks is fun when you learn how geologists use different properties of the rock to determine its name. You can learn to identify rocks like granite using color, texture, and mineral content.

Granite is very hard and tough and often has a speckled look that is white, light gray, pink, red, or yellowish in color. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock that is made by volcanoes when the magma cools very slowly underground. The slow-cooling magma gives the rock a medium-grained texture because the mineral grains have plenty of time to grow to a size that is easy to see. Granite is made primarily of the minerals feldspar, quartz, and micas and sometimes has smaller amounts of hornblende, magnetite, garnet, and pyroxene. Granite is often used as a building material for walls, flooring, countertops, and statues and monuments.
