Spanish Conservative opposition leader Jose Maria Aznar, who
narrowly escaped a car-bomb attempt on his life by Basque
separatists (ETA), said on Thursday (20/4) that Spain would not be
intimidated by "worthless terrorists." "Violence will not have the
last word in Spain," he told reporters. The leader of the conservative
Popular Party (PP) left hospital and returned to work at PP
headquarters on Thursday. He also visited the other fifteen
victims of the blast and said his thoughts and heart were with
them. Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez said, "the fact that Aznar
represents a clear alternative form of government in Spain makes
the attempt all the more serious." Gonzalez added that he thinks
ETA, which has killed about 800 people in its 26-year-old battle
for an independent state, is now relatively weak.
