At the end of October, the Rapid Support Forces captured El Fasher from the army.

It was yet another brutal development in Sudan’s war. Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab has said the level of violence was comparable to the first 24 hours of the Rwandan genocide. Since then, the RSF has been accused of killing hundreds of unarmed civilians in ethnically motivated attacks.

The RSF now controls all major urban centres in Darfur, with the country facing the possibility of partition.

But who are the RSF, and what role do international players like the UAE have here?
