Earlier this year (25), my Playoff performance of this song from The Voice aired.
I was really happy with how well it received. I got all kinds of inspiring messages about it and GLAAD wrote it up in an article!
In the song, Chappell is mid-revelation, her decision to leave Tennessee and pursue her personal freedom already made, grappling with the fallout it could cause.
Specifically, her mother serves as an antagonist: Won’t make my mama proud / She’s gonna cause a scene
A lot of the lyrics are unrelatable for me. I was lucky enough to grow up in a home that welcomed me before and after I “came out”.
The part that I do relate to, and the part that I tapped into in order to sing the song is the desire to escape your circumstance for something better.
Small town US is not famously friendly to queer people. Growing up queer was isolating and scary.
Much progress has been made even since I left the place I was born 10 years ago, and that is not by accident.
That would not have come without a sustained effort from the queer community, especially the trans community, to make it so.
Trans people have always spearheaded queer liberation and fought the hardest for us only to end up dead last when it comes to being kept safe, healthy, and dignified by the system.
Right now, regression is a bigger threat than ever. Bullshit narratives that paint trans people as inherently violent are being spewed by government leadership without any fact or logic behind them.
Over half the states in the union have banned medical care for trans youth and eight states uphold forced-outing policies.
Despite being less than 2% of the U.S. adult population, trans people are four times as likely to be victims of crime.
Attacks on trans people are plainly a far-right extremist attempt to deflect blame from themselves on their own policies and extend their authority to deliberately harm queer people.
At this point we need to call a spade a spade— this, in combination with the current administration’s onslaught of harmful policies, is a freak show.
Few other countries on earth provide this glaring of a gap between wealthy and poor, safe and unsafe, housed and unhoused.
No other country on earth claims to be its wealthiest while allowing its majority populations’ quality of life to diminish so rapidly.
Our culture is one of violence: physical, economic, systemic, and so on, and right now trans people are receiving a disproportionate amount of it.
