Suryakumar Yadav Inspires GLS University Students During Convocation in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Indian cricketer and T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav added energy, humour and inspiration to the convocation ceremony of GLS University in Ahmedabad as he addressed students, parents and faculty members in an engaging interactive session on Saturday evening.

Greeting the audience in a mix of Hindi, English and Gujarati, Yadav said it was a pleasure to be part of the university’s “wonderful legacy,” noting with a smile that GLS University, at 99 years, was “just one run away from scoring a century.” He praised the lively atmosphere, proud parents and the celebratory spirit of the convocation.

Setting an informal tone, Yadav invited students to ask him anything, promising honest answers. During the interaction, he spoke at length about innovation, discipline and persistence—values that have defined his cricketing journey. Responding to a question about his trademark “Supla Shot,” Yadav said he wanted to do something different from the beginning of his career. “I kept practising it over and over in training. When the opportunity came on the international stage, I was ready,” he said, adding that once he played the shot successfully, he never looked back.

On the changing landscape of education, Yadav welcomed the introduction of new disciplines such as sports management. Sharing his own experience, he said that although his family came from an academic background and encouraged conventional careers, he believed in trying something new. “Sometimes it’s important to bring change in life and explore new paths. Platforms like sports management help students stay connected to sports while building a career,” he said, praising GLS University for offering diverse options.

Reflecting on the importance of education, Yadav said learning beyond sports was essential. “Sport teaches you a lot, but education gives you perspective. Side by side, you can pursue what you love,” he told the students, urging them to value their degrees and lifelong learning.

Answering questions on leadership and team culture, the Indian skipper highlighted the need for freedom of expression and collective thinking in a team sport. “Everyone brings different skills to the table. As a leader, it’s important to listen, keep the environment positive and think about what the team requires, not personal milestones,” he said.

Recalling the memorable catch in the T20 World Cup final, Yadav described it as the result of year-long preparation rather than a moment of impulse. “There was no time to think. The only thought was to get the ball inside the rope. Practice gave me the confidence that something special could happen—and it did,” he said, calling it a proud moment for the country.

On his own form and expectations from the upcoming tournaments, Yadav remained optimistic, calling challenging phases a “learning process.” He assured fans that the team was working hard to entertain the nation and perform as a united group.

Concluding the session, Yadav said he was taking back “a lot of positive energy” from the university. He congratulated graduating students, acknowledged the pride on parents’ faces, and wished all students success in their future endeavours.
