The Japanese Gas Mask Island
If You Need To Blink Do So Now
For What I Am About To Tell You Is Mildly Entertaining

Going outside? Don’t forget to take your gas mask. Despite the high levels of volcanic activity. On the island of Miyakejima, Japan, some of the islands denizens just will not stay away. Regardless of the poisonous gasses. In the year 2000, 3,600 residents were forced by the government to evacuate the island.

Since it is part of a chain of volcanoes, Miyakejima is a major hub for volcanic activity. Over the last 100 years the islands volcanoes have erupted six different times. The worst in the last 100 years occurred in June 2000. After a quiet period of 17 years Mount Oyama erupted. And a staggering 17500 earthquakes followed the eruption. All hitting the island in less than a month

During this massive assault of eruptions and earthquakes, ash plumes soared over ten miles high enveloping the island. Covering everything with ash. Later high levels of toxic sulfur dioxide was detected rising up through the ground. Making over twenty percent of the island uninhabitable. After a period of three months the government forced a mass evacuation in September. In the interest of public safety.

For five years the government declared the island off limits. As the island resembled a post apocalyptic scene from a movie. Dead trees, rusted cars, and abandoned buildings everywhere. The island continued to spew ten thousand to twenty thousand tones of toxic gasses daily. For two years. Slowly the government began to lift the evacuation order. In two thousand and five citizens were finally allowed to return to their homes.

Some of the islands residents decided to remain in Tokyo where they were relocated. However about two thousand eight hundred chose to return. This time they all brought gas masks with them. Even though the island has been repopulated nearly a third of it remains permanently off limits. The government does regular health checks. And Also enforces age restrictions in certain parts of the island.

Even though life in this gas soaked island poses a few real life threatening dangers it has not kept the tourist away. The fact that you need to wear a gas mask has been a huge draw for the island. Disposable masks are sold all over.

Tourist can take tours of abandoned streets, houses, and cars. There is even a school gym that was half destroyed by lava. As well as the relaxing hot spring baths.

Apparently an active volcano and spewing deadly toxic gas is not enough to keep some residents and tourist away.
