Announced at a gala presentation at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Thursday 13 August, twenty-six exemplary projects from across Australia have been recognized in the 2015 Think Brick Awards, Australia’s richest design awards. Now in its ninth year, the Think Brick Awards celebrates design excellence in the use of clay brick, concrete masonry and roof tiles by Australia’s best architects and designers.

The Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award rewards innovation and craftsmanship in the use of clay and concrete masonry in landscape and urban design projects. The award is named to honour renowned Australian landscape architect Bruce Mackenzie.

In 2015 the awards jury considered a record number of entries to the Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award category, with one winner and four finalists chosen from more than 300 entries. The jury comprised of renowned architects and experts, including Jayson Blight (COX Architecture, QLD), Clare Cousins (Clare Cousins Architects, VIC), Anupama Kundoo (Anupama Kundoo, Spain/India), Cameron Bruhn (Architecture Media) and Elizabeth McIntyre (Think Brick).

This year’s winner of the Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award is Langtree Mall
Mildura (Vic) by Hansen Partnership, who receives a $10,000 cash prize.

The Langtree Mall project involved the redevelopment of a pedestrian mall in Mildura, originally developed in the early 1980s. The design is a collaboration between Hansen Partnership, Bellemo & Cat Architects and Aurecon. Key elements of the design have a direct relationship to Mildura as a place and a community and the paving design references both the natural landscape of the Murray River and the agricultural landscape that surrounds it.

The jury commented, “A subtle collage of materials has been woven together to create a highly functional and thoroughly engaging urban space for the Mildura community.”
