Every single one of us are children of the King. It's an amazing concept, adoption by the King of the universe. We are His children!
There's nothing more wonderful than actual children singing about being children of the King. And, this is what this song is about. The lyrics strongly apply to adults, as well. But, especially to children. In our work and in our play - we want Jesus to stay with us. We want to strive to be true and faithful to Him. Then, we can sing, "We are children of the King!"
I'm not a huge fan, in general, of the modern worship music for children. And, this song, perhaps, illustrates why. In this hymn, precise goals and strivings are outlined to children of the King (young and old ones). In Verse 2, it says "May we in Thy strength subdue evil tempers, words untrue, thoughts impure and deeds unkind - all things hateful to Thy mind. Then we truthfully can sing - we are children of the King." There's so little in today's society, and even in Christian society, that suggests that children can succeed, with God's help, in subduing undesirable traits of character. I have, too often, heard behaviour described as - "That's just what they are like." But, with God's help, even little children can avoid these behaviours so hateful to Him. With lyrics like this, children can tangibly recognise what it is they are to strive to leave behind. There's nothing airy fairy or fluffy about this. It's true, practical and pure.
Verse 3 goes on to develop this concept fully -
"Children of the King are we, may we loyal to Him be.
Try to please Him every day. In our work and in our play."
Instead of gratifying self and our selfish desires, here we are directed to be loyal to the King and strive to please Him in all we do. It's a noble striving for young ones and old ones alike. Instead of conforming to the world and it's self obsessed actions, loyalty to Jesus - that's what matters.
Thank you to my children for singing this song. This Songs and Everlasting Joy version was adapted from a special recording the children completed for their little cousin at his dedication service. It was a lovely day, which we were miraculously able to share with them in person also. We can all rededicate our lives to Jesus while singing this song, as well.
