Ever wonder why some Zoom interviews just feel off? It's not the lighting. It's not the mic. It’s the eyes.

Over the weekend I happened to catch an interview on #MSNBC with the hosts interviewing the mayor of Newark, New Jersey. The interview itself was great; full of great information and energy but.. it was distracting. WHY?

The mayor, a solid guest, never once looked into the camera lens. He looked right, then left, sometimes above as if he were gathering his thoughts. But at no time did he make firm eye contact with the hosts/aka the camera.
Why does that matter? Because on camera, where your eyes go, trust follows.

In fact, Harvard research suggests that eye contact—even virtual eye contact—can significantly increase perceived credibility and connection. But when you look at yourself on screen instead of the lens, it creates a disconnect. You seem distracted or disinterested—even when you're not.

This isn’t just a cosmetic tweak—it’s a trust issue.

In the Zoom era (and it’s not going away), being camera-comfortable is no longer optional for professionals. Whether you're interviewing, pitching, or presenting, your audience needs to feel like you’re speaking to them, not just near them.
