With the Mill Mountain Star being the largest Freestanding man-made star in the world you can't miss it if you are living in Roanoke. Heck if you have only passed through Roanoke you can't miss it. It sits 1740 Feet above sea level and stands 88.5 feet tall, 100 feet tall if you count the structure.

Built-in 1949 by Roy C Kinsey with Kinsey sign company and Robert Little with Roanoke Iron & Bridge Works. The merchants of Roanoke voted to put the star on the mountain to kick off the Christmas season. Little did they know how popular it would be. It was lit white with 2,000 bulbs and used 17,500 watts of power it could be seen for 60 miles in the air. Whenever there was a traffic fatality they would change the color to red.

The Mill Mountain Star was "lit" by Mayor A.R. Minton but the breaker was turned on by Bob Kinsey. Congressman Clifton A Woodrum Bedicated it with a bible verse... "When they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding joy" Matthew 2:10. Greene Memorial Methodist Choir sang America and the Star-Spangled Banner. James H. More, manager of WSLS was a master of Ceremonies.

In 1976 they changed the color to Red, White, and Blue to celebrate our nation's independence. September 11th, 2001 the Star was changed back to Red, White, and Blue and stayed that way for the next 6 years. In 2006 it went through a $100,000 renovation to upgrade the electrical and most of the bulbs. April 22, 2007 the Mill Mountain Star was changed back to white as a symbol of hope after the VA Tech Massacre.

The Mill Mountain Star is about 15 mins from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 10 minutes from Downtown Roanoke, it also features a ton of walking and biking trails along with a zoo (Mill Mountain Zoo).
