Common Red Ant - Myrmica rubra - Nests under walls and old tree stumps. Like all British ants it lives in colonies. Most of the inhabitants of a colony are females and have no wings. These do all the work, gathering food and tending the eggs. See more: http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/...

For more than 100 million years, ants have been living on the Earth. They can be found almost anywhere on the planet. As of 2006, there are 11,880 known ant species, most of which reside in hot climates. Ants are members of the family of social insects which means they live in organised colonies. The family of ants is known as the Formicidae. Many ants eat the sweet fluid called ‘honeydew’ excreted by aphids. Some species keep and protect aphids – sometimes even in their own nests. Ants will transport aphids from plant to plant and take the eggs into their colony for the winter. Ants will also defend aphids from insect predators, such as lady beetles and lacewings, by attacking them in large numbers. Aphids are an ants favourite food! Garden ants are more of a nuisance than a real problem and they rarely damage plants directly. Large nests may literally expose the root systems of plants to thin air rather than earthly nutrients, which will cause them to dry out. In some instances they can farm aphids for their sugary honeydew, and protect them by eating their predators. See more: https://www.lovethegarden.com/advice/...

When ants of the species Temnothorax unifasciatus get sick, they abandon their nest, walking far away from their relatives to die alone. They perform this act of heroism to prevent the illness that is killing them from spreading to the colony. The discovery, published in Current Biology, is the first time that such behaviour has been shown in ants or any other social insect. Professor Jurgen Heinze and PhD student Bartosz Walter decided to investigate the ants' behaviour after becoming interested in anecdotal reports of dying individuals deserting their families. The workers left the nest voluntarily and were not carried away Dr Michel Chapuisat University of Lausanne Such behaviour has been reported in dogs, cats, elephants and even people. Yellow Meadow Ant - Lasius flavus - is, as the name suggests, yellowish brown in colour. A number of features distinguish it from other similar species of ant, including the fact that the lower sections of the antennae and the tibiae lack hairs. The workers are around 2 to 3.5 mm in length. It is a difficult species to identify and it is as well to seek expert confirmation. See more: http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/...

The insect was unharmed in the making of this video.

Unfortunately handheld, with such a macro the video is shaky and not always on focus. I filmed this with Panasonic Lumix DMC- TZ40 camera
