God is working behind the scenes. God's perfect plan is being worked out - as with Joseph's story - your pain becomes your purpose.
Discover the profound doctrine of God's providence in this Session 8 of our Systematic Theology series on Theology Proper (the study of God). We explore what God does—beyond who He is—focusing on His ongoing work of preserving, concurring with, and governing all creation for His glory and our good.
Genesis 50:20 serves as our anchor: "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive..." Joseph's betrayal by his brothers, slavery, imprisonment, and rise to power reveal the mystery of providence: human responsibility (evil intentions and sin) coexists with divine sovereignty (God actively directing all things for gracious purposes). We see this echoed in Esther 4:14 ("for such a time as this"), Job 1:21 ("The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord"), and even Christ's crucifixion (Acts 4:27-28—Herod, Pilate, and others did what God's hand and counsel predestined).
Key truths unpacked:
Preservation: God upholds all things by His powerful word (Hebrews 1:3; Colossians 1:17; Acts 17:28). Nothing exists or moves apart from Him—"In Him we live and move and have our being."
Concurrence: God cooperates with creatures so they act as they do, affirming both divine causation (Psalm 115:3—He does whatever He pleases) and human responsibility (Philippians 2:13—God works in us to will and act). He is not the author of sin (Westminster Confession insights).
Government: God rules as King over the universe, directing history, politics, personal lives, and the advance of His kingdom toward ultimate victory (Revelation 19—Christ triumphant).
This sweet yet mysterious doctrine challenges modern self-reliance: We are not captains of our souls. As Spurgeon said, "I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages." William Cowper's hymn echoes: "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform."
Applications for daily life:
Trust God's sovereign plan in trials and suffering.
Be patient in adversity and cultivate holy contentment ("Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say: It is well with my soul").
Pray, evangelise, and serve boldly—God doesn't need us, yet graciously includes us in His work.
Stand in awe: The same God who provided a lamb for Abraham (Genesis 22:8, Jehovah Jireh) provides salvation through Christ, the ultimate Lamb.
Whether facing betrayal, hardship, or uncertainty, providence assures us: All things work for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28). Let this truth lead to worship, dependence, and fearless living.Perfect for Christians deepening their faith, Bible study groups, or anyone wrestling with "Why does God allow this?"
