Tanya was Carlisle's mate and they lived together with Kate and Irina. His presence encouraged the sisters to learn to live from the blood of animals and move on from their succubus past.
Carlisle felt he was destined for greater things and left them to follow his dreams, leaving Tanya heartbroken. She searched for him for many years and eventually found him again, only to find that he was now married and had a new family, and she was too late.
Edward, who was single at the time had a short fling with Tanya before he too left her. Tanya still lightheartedly pursued Edward, until she meets Bella. In the end she realises the thing that matters most is her love for her sisters, and gives up on both of them.
Tanya never really forgets Carlisle and this is the reason that today the Cullens and Denalis are so close and follow the same vegetarian lifestyle.
