Security agencies are on alert after multiple aircraft-shaped balloons marked with “PIA – Pakistan International Airlines” were recovered from border districts of Jammu & Kashmir, including Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Akhnoor, and Kathua in January 2026. Initial investigations found no explosives or suspicious devices, and officials believe the balloons may have drifted across the border due to wind currents. However, in view of recent drone activity in the region, authorities are not ruling out any possibility and have increased surveillance across sensitive border areas. The incidents highlight heightened security sensitivity along the J&K border.
