The January 4, 2023, meeting of the Rotary Club of San Dimas featured a presentation by Ryan Backmann, founder and executive of Project: Cold Case.
Project: Cold Case was born out of a desire to provide hope to families of unsolved homicide victims.

When a murder happens, families are immediately thrust into a world that they most likely have no experience with. Navigating through the investigation and judicial processes and their own grief is an incredible challenge. Should the investigation grow cold, there are few avenues for families to turn.

That’s where Project: Cold Case comes in. We work to bridge the gap between surviving families and the investigating agency while advocating for those who have been taken too soon.

Since being founded in 2015, Project: Cold Case has grown to a national level. Based out of Jacksonville, Florida, our organization works with families across the country. Over 1,000 cases have been submitted by families and law enforcement to be featured on our website.

We work tirelessly to put these cases back into the public light. Each week, we publish a Spotlight article showcasing the life of one of our victims – a life taken far too soon. We work closely with media outlets to publish stories of these cases. There are many projects that we have had a hand in, and many more planned.

Project: Cold Case is not an investigating agency. Nor are we a television show. We work directly with grieving family members to tell their stories, remember their loved ones, and learn to smile and laugh again.
Ryan Backmann is the founder and executive director of Project: Cold Case, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving families of unsolved homicide victims. In 2009 Ryan’s father, Cliff Backmann, was shot and killed during a robbery in what remains one of the nation’s 270,000+ unsolved murders. Founded in 2015, Project: Cold Case works to publicize cold cases while linking families, information, and law enforcement.

Ryan serves on the Statewide Cold Case Advisory Commission as the only survivor/advocate. He is a board member for the Southeastern Homicide Investigators Association, a subject matter expert on cold case advocacy for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, a Regional Coordinator for the Florida Crisis Response Team and a member of the prestigious Vidocq Society, which assist law enforcement on cold cases. Ryan was the recipient of the 2022 National Organization for Victim Assistance Board of Directors Special Recognition Award.
