If you have been teaching for a while, it is highly likely that you have had students with dyslexia in your classroom, even if you were not aware of it. According to the British Dyslexia Association, 10% of the population have dyslexia, a learning difficulty that affects primarily reading and writing skills. Other researchers argue this number can be as high as 20%, with many people not even knowing they are dyslexic.

There are many types of dyslexia and no two individuals will have the same symptoms, however, many dyslexics will struggle with decoding texts and processing a new language, which can affect their self-esteem and motivation to learn.

In this video, I talk to Boelo Van Der Pool, a language coach who specialises in dyslexia and talks about the frustration many students with dyslexia feel as the traditional education system doesn't favour their way of understanding things. Boelo is currently working on a method that takes these students' needs into consideration and has been quite successful so far. He gives teachers some advice, such as finding the right fonts to use in the texts, reducing the number of paragraphs or questions on a page, and working a lot on the students' self-esteem.
