(3 Oct 2018) A congressional candidate is among 18 people arrested for disorderly conduct during a protest in Detroit for a higher minimum wage and the right to form unions.
Democrat Rashida Tlaib (ruh-SHEE'-duh tuh-LEEB') was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon for blocking a traffic lane. She faces candidates from the Green and Working Class parties for the 13th District House seat.
The protest was organized by Fight for $15, a national movement seeking to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour for fast food, child care, airlines and other workers. The group also wants the right to start unions or join existing ones. Several hundred people marched before protesting in front of a Midtown McDonalds.
"We've got a new epidemic in America of working poor. People who work, they go to work just like any of us. But the fact is their work doesn't pay, because we've allowed the corporations' CEOs to make more per second than these folks make per hour," said Abdul El-Sayed, a former Democratic candidate for Michigan governor who also was taken into custody.
Deputy Police Chief Elvin Barren says those arrested would be ticketed and released later Tuesday.
