Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) is when a person feels intense emotional pain related to rejection. The word “dysphoria” comes from an ancient Greek word that describes a strong — if not overwhelming — feeling of pain or discomfort

Signs of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria
Being easily embarrassed or ashamed.
Having an emotional outburst and getting angry when they feel rejected.
Setting impossibly high standards for themselves.
Experiencing low self-esteem.
Feeling anxious, especially in social settings.
Having issues with relationships.

While someone with RSD may experience these same symptoms, one major difference between RSD and anxiety is timing. Someone with a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) feels anxious often for six months. But when someone with ADHD and RSD feels anxious about rejection, it's situational.

Rejection sensitive dysphoria is a brain-based symptom that is likely an innate feature of ADHD. Though the experience of rejection sensitive dysphoria can be painful and even traumatic, RSD is not thought to be caused by trauma.
