Jane Wangechi was born in Kericho East and raised well by both her parents. She completed her secondary education and later joined college. After college, she met a man who fell in love with her. Believing she had found a good husband, she quickly decided to marry him without taking much time to truly know him.

After some time, Jane became pregnant. At first, her husband agreed to take responsibility, but later he changed. He stopped paying rent, leaving Jane—who was working as a teacher—to shoulder all the responsibilities. She bought everything needed for her baby in preparation for delivery. She even gave him 6,000 shillings in case she went into labor. However, when the time came, he claimed he didn’t have the money. Later, he came to discharge her from the hospital, but to her shock, she was told that he had helped her leave without paying. Jane then went to stay with his mother, but for two weeks he never visited them.

One day, Jane found him with another woman in their house. When she tried to defend herself, things escalated—he beat her severely, leaving marks on her body. Jane decided to leave, but later they reconciled and got back together. Unfortunately, nothing changed; he continued neglecting his responsibilities as a husband and father.

At one point, he bought a new machete and asked Jane to take it for sharpening. That night, she remembered the threats he had often made. Fearing for her safety, she hid both the knife and the machete.

This is Jane’s story as she narrates her life in marriage—the struggles she endured, the abuse she suffered, and ultimately how her marriage came to an end.
