Labour-run Birmingham City Council has declared itself effectively bankrupt after being hit with a £760million bill to settle an equal pay claim.

Europe's largest local authority confirmed that it cannot balance its books, adding all new council spending in the city, with the exception of protecting vulnerable people and statutory services, must stop immediately.

James Whale brands the council as "incompetent" and "amateurish" after they issued a financial distress notice.

"They have to realise this is our money, there is no such thing as Government money!"
