Kerala Scientists Develop Nanotech Wound-Healing Pad from Red Ivy | JNTBGRI Breakthrough
A major scientific breakthrough has come from the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden & Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Kerala. Researchers have developed a novel wound-healing pad that combines nanotechnology with a bioactive compound from the red ivy plant (Strobilanthes alternata).
For the first time, scientists identified acteoside in red ivy — a powerful natural compound with proven pharmacological properties. This wound pad uses 0.2% acteoside along with neomycin sulfate, embedded in a multi-layered electro-spun nanofibre structure made of biodegradable, FDA-approved polymers. The design allows gas exchange, helping wounds breathe and heal faster.
🌿 Red ivy, locally called murikooti pacha, is known in Ayurveda as Vranaropani (wound healer) and has been used traditionally in Asia for treating cuts, infections, and bleeding. Today, its healing properties are being redefined with cutting-edge nanotechnology.
This innovation marks the fusion of ancient botanical wisdom and modern science, paving the way for advanced wound care solutions.
