With the Intel Core i9-10900K seizing the crown of "fastest gaming CPU ever" this past May, AMD had a big goal with the release of its Ryzen 9 5900X: Dethrone the monarch in performance, and do it for less money. The company hit just one of those targets, but that's enough. In our testing, the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X ($549) ranks as the fastest mainstream-platform gaming CPU we've seen to date, while regularly beating back Intel's competing chips for content creation and productivity work. Any loose ends from AMD's Zen 2 launch have now been stitched up, and the new Zen 3 architecture shows that a little refinement in process and design can go a long way in the world of desktop processors. Here at the end of 2020, if you want the fastest processor around $500 for just about everything, compromise is out. AMD is the way to go, and the Editors' Choice-winning Ryzen 9 5900X will thrill hardcore gamers and motivated content creators alike. If it were $500, it would be five stars.
With Zen 3, AMD is knocking out Intel's last leg, or at least making it buckle. Just take a look at some of these supremacy claims AMD has made for the 5900X over the Core i9-10900K. (Our own numbers coming up in a moment.)
The 12-core/24-thread AMD Ryzen 9 5900X ($549) enters as the second-most powerful CPU that AMD is offering in the late-2020 Zen 3 stack, just behind the 16-core/32-thread Ryzen 9 5950X ($799). The rest of the initial foursome of new Zen 3-based CPUs includes the eight-core/16-thread Ryzen 7 5800X ($449, tested alongside the 5900X), and the six-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 5600X ($299).

AMD claims its engineers have achieved up to 19 percent IPC gains in the move from Zen 2 to Zen 3, a task it says was accomplished by improving almost every aspect of the previous architecture. Everything from the branch prediction to the cache prefetching and the size of the cache have been tweaked, and a whole lot more.
