Listen to the frightening sounds of black howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) also known as black-and-gold howlers.

This is the third species of Howler monkey that I've heard and recorded. The Black howler sound slightly different to the others but still recognisable and pretty frightening if you don't know what you are hearing. I first heard them in the Pantanal on an early morning drive and even though they were quite far away I had to stop and take it in properly.

Howler monkeys are the loudest land mammal and their calls are one of nature's great spectacles. They start calling just before dawn to advertise their territories to other families in the area to avoid direct confrontation between groups. The males also use their voice to compete for mating rights, with the louder ones being more successful with the females. An excellent example of great use of sound.
