LEGO Island (1997, Windows) v1.0 playthrough

Описание к видео LEGO Island (1997, Windows) v1.0 playthrough

A playthrough of version 1.0 of LEGO Island, a 3D action-adventure proto-open world game released on 26 September 1997. The day this video is being published, 26 September 2022, is the game's 25th anniversary.

I didn't like that all of the existing videos of this game either play only as Pepper or play only an assortment of minigames, so for the game's 25th birthday here is one that covers as much of the game as possible, and playing the game as it was meant to be played – not as a game to be completed, but more as a toy to mess around in. The entire score cube is filled with red, a lot of time is spent roaming the island and experiencing things, and both endings for the Brickster chase are shown. Even with this video ending up over 8 hours long, I still missed a whole bunch of dialogue no matter how much I tried – that's how extensive this game is.

With Pepper, I tried showing yellow, blue, and red bricks for the car and jetski races (I wanted to with the tow truck and hospital minigames as well, but figured it would take too long since they have very lenient times). With the other characters, I (tried to) get red bricks in every minigame, except the pizza delivery ones, where I continued to get the three possible endings for each. After completing the score cube, the Brickster was released.

Most videos also show version 1.1, so I decided to use the original release for this. Version 1.0 has a few differences from the more common version 1.1, including slightly different building mechanics and a few minor lines present in one version and not the other. I know it's probably not much, especially for such a major date, but I hope it's something at least. I don't really know how else to celebrate a game, and while Rock Raiders is always my favorite, this game is truly special. I honestly don't think there has ever really been a game like it again unfortunately. The amount of care and effort that went into this game is staggering, and the way Mindscape treated its creators and destroyed any future games like it is awful.

Sorry I haven't finished the subtitles. This ended up being longer and taking longer than I expected. I'll keep working on it and update with a comment when it's finished. Currently up through 3:00:00.

Played on Windows 10, using LEGO Island Rebuilder https://github.com/itsmattkc/LEGOIsla...
LEGO Island Rebuilder settings: Unhook Turning From Frame Rate set to True, FPS Cap set to Limited 60, Model Quality set to Infinite.
Direct 3D Device set to Direct 3D HAL, using dgVoodoo v2.71.2 http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVo... (later versions introduce some bugs). I tried to get the game looking as close to how it was intended as possible.
dgVoodoo settings: Filtering set to Force point sampled, Antialiasing set to 8x, Force vSync enabled.
Recorded with OBS 28.0.1
Recorded at 640x480 resolution, 60fps. This video has been upscaled from 480p to 720p to preserve quality (not like it helps much these days) and so that it can play in 60fps.

Special thanks to the boxload of professionals and kids alike, programmers, artists, writers, musicians, actors, animators, designers, recording engineers, researchers, and so many many more who created LEGO Island. And of course to Wes Jenkins, gone but not forgotten, along with Jason Brown, Ralph Peduto, June Foray, David L. Lander, and all the early settlers of LEGO Island.
Special Fuck You to John Moore, Rosemary Yates, and anyone else at Mindscape responsible for screwing the developers over.
