NASA's Perseverance rover has been on the surface of Mars for one full Mars year, which is roughly equivalent to two Earth years. Since its landing in February 2021, the rover has traveled over 18 miles, captured thousands of images and videos, and deployed the Ingenuity helicopter, which conducted the first-ever powered flights on another world. The Perseverance rover's mission is focused on searching for signs of ancient microbial life on Mars and paving the way for future human exploration of the planet. It has been equipped with scientific instruments like the MOXIE experiment and the PIXL and SHERLOC instruments to analyze rock and soil samples. The rover is also collecting and storing samples that will be retrieved and returned to Earth by future missions.
