The moment we saw him try to spark a blaze.
On July 13th, 2025, Scott Mitchell, a former University of Kentucky and professional wide receiver, was hiking Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles with his partner, fashion designer and creative director Davanh DiMarco, when everything changed.
In the middle of a crowded trail, a man named Andrew Ocalliham was seen attempting to ignite what could have become one of Los Angeles’ most devastating wildfires. With lighter in hand and brush all around, the risk wasn’t just to the canyon. It was to the city, to homes, and to one of the most beloved community spaces in California.
Davanh was the first to notice both Ocalliham and the brush beginning to burn. She alerted Scott, urging him to act. From nearly 150 yards away, Scott sprinted down the trail to confront Ocalliham, ultimately restraining him and holding him until LAPD arrived. What started as an ordinary hike turned into an extraordinary act of civic courage.
By the time first responders reached the canyon, flames had already spread. It ultimately took 53 LAFD firefighters and 7 water airdrops to extinguish the blaze before it consumed more of Runyon Canyon. The risk wasn’t just to hikers on the trail — it was to homes, wildlife, and the Los Angeles skyline itself.
The footage of that moment has now been seen over 1 billion times across all media platforms, a testament to how deeply this story has resonated with people around the world.
The story, captured on video, went global within hours. CNN, NewsNation’s Banfield, NBC, ABC, LA Times, Sports Illustrated, and countless other outlets reported on what happened. CNN’s Jake Tapper, host of The Lead, even described Scott and Davanh as American Heroes.
But this story didn’t end at Runyon Canyon. It became the spark for something larger: Protect Our Path™, an initiative dedicated to protecting community spaces, preventing wildfires, and inspiring people everywhere to take action when it matters most.

📰 Why This Matters
California wildfires have destroyed entire towns, displaced families, and threatened some of the state’s most treasured landscapes. In January 2025, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena were devastated by wildfires, leaving scars on communities that are still recovering.
Runyon Canyon is more than a trail, it’s a gathering place for Angelenos and for people from around the world. That day in July, it could have been lost in the same way. What happened here wasn’t just the prevention of a small brush fire, it was the prevention of a disaster that could have mirrored those tragedies across Los Angeles.
The choice to act, to protect not just Los Angeles but every community’s shared spaces, is what turned this from just another incident into a story of resilience and responsibility.
