Flying solo to Dublin, Ireland (with a cat in cabin) | Delta

On May 4, 2022 I flew by myself with my cat Tedward from Pensacola, Florida to Dublin, Ireland. This was my first experience flying internationally with a Ted. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as I was hoping.

🕰TIMESTAMPS
00:00 morning walk
00:14 We're going to Ireland!
00:39 pet travel documents/travel gear
06:14 bye Pensacola!
07:05 Atlanta layover
10:05 Dublin bound!
10:40 my cat made it to Dublin!

If you’re flying with a pet you need to check-in in person. For pet check in you have to go see someone at “Additional Services.” We flew with Delta.

TSA was the least of my worries (thankfully). Put my bag through the scanner, took Ted out of his carrier so they could scan his bag, and I carried him though the metal detector. Would HIGHLY recommend that you get TSA-precheck if you don’t already or request a private screening.

On our first flight from PNS to ATL Ted was very well behaved. Once in Atlanta I took him to some pet relief areas. When we had flown from California the week prior we only used private restrooms so it was cool to be able to check out and use a pet relief room. But, I hate how dogs are the only pets recognized so all the pet relief areas cater to them. They smell like dog pee and you can’t lock them (like a private restroom) so I had to constantly be on alert for incoming dogs.

Our flight to Dublin was around 8 hours and Ted cried for 6 of those hours. It was horrible. I felt completely helpless. I tried everything I could think of to soothe him but nothing worked so if you have any tips that could be helpful for the future please leave a comment!

After I got my passport stamped I had to do a pet compliance check at the Department of Agriculture (€50) and present an international pet health certificate, which you can only obtain from a USDA accredited vet. The Department of Agriculture is located in the baggage claim area. You have to schedule the compliance check before your arrival. You can send an email to [email protected] or call +353 874178986

The cost for international pet health certificates is not universal so what it cost me won’t necessarily be the same for you. For me it cost $125 for the certificate, $78 for the physical exam, and $50 for the processing fee.I would recommend you have your vet submit your pet’s information electronically and expedite shipping. Overnight shipping was $85. These certificates take 3-5 business days to process and are only valid for 10 days after they’ve been approved.

ℹ️While in Dublin we stayed at Beckett Locke, a pet friendly hotel with very kind receptionists.
