Beyond Bentiu

Local residents are leaving the safety of the Protection of Civilians Site (PoC) next to the UN base in Bentiu, South Sudan in search of a new future. With the aid of the Beyond Bentiu strategy, the local population that wants to return to designated communities around Bentiu will have the support of humanitarian partners as well as the security of UNMISS military patrols. Many who found refuge in the PoC site during surges in conflict are taking advantage of a lull in fighting to reestablish themselves outside the permimeter of the PoC site. This joint approach is proving successful at Bentiu where more than 17,000 people who lived in the UN POC site have now officially returned to their homes to live with dignity, and in peace.
