Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen highlighted that the primary reason for National Service (NS) enlistment is to train a soldier to fight for and defend Singapore. This is far off from the proposal to enlist women to serve in roles such as caregivers and healthcare workers.

Enlisting women in NS would furthermore result in a significant drop in the size of the local workforce and a loss in household income. This will come at a high cost in the long run, not only to women, but also to their families, marriages, and society as a whole.

He was speaking in Parliament on 9 May 2022.
