Binadamu are interesting creatures because we often start with good intentions, yet somehow we end up ruining the very things we set out to build. Part of the reason is that our stated intentions and our internal incentives don’t always match. Someone can genuinely want something good, but still carry hidden agendas, from desires for status, comfort, approval, or control. These quiet incentives slowly influence decisions, and before we notice, the original goal has shifted to serve those hidden motives.

On top of that, we operate with cognitive limits. We don’t see the full picture. We’re prone to biases, shortcuts in reasoning, and emotional reactions that feel logical in the moment. These limitations make it easy for us to rationalize small compromises. With time, these small compromises compound and eventually distort the pursuit itself, leaving us far from where we intended to go.

Then there are the forces acting behind the scenes...social pressures, cultural expectations, power structures, and invisible systems. Some are obvious, but many are not. Because we don’t fully understand them, we underestimate how much they shape our behavior. These forces influence our choices quietly, sometimes even more strongly than our conscious intentions.

When you put all this together, from hidden agendas, cognitive biases, unseen pressures etc, you get a predictable outcome: good pursuits going off-course. Each factor amplifies the others. Hidden motives take advantage of our blind spots. Our biases prevent us from seeing how external forces are manipulating the situation. And the unseen forces themselves push us in directions we never chose consciously.

So the real issue isn’t that people are bad...it’s that there’s more going on beneath the surface than we realize. To protect good pursuits, we need honesty about our motives, awareness of our mental limitations, and humility toward the things we don’t know. Without that, even the best intentions will eventually drift.
