On Monday, February 6, Station 22, Springfield, placed new Truck 422, a 2022 Pierce Velocity Heavy Duty Aerial Ladder, in service. The unit replaces a 2004 Pierce Aerial purchased by the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department in 2004. That truck accumulated over 170,000 miles over its 19-year career serving the residents and visitors of Fairfax County.

New Truck 422 was designed by a committee of subject matter experts within the department to ensure maximum safety and operational performance. The truck was designed to be maneuverable and has an improved turning radius and tapered rear corners. In addition, improvements to both the emergency and scene lighting will greatly assist in firefighter safety. Also featured is a new ground ladder compliment that includes lightweight ladders for rapid deployment at fires.

The big ladder on top of Truck 422 is an 105' heavy duty steel ladder. Truck 422 has a pre-piped waterway (plumbing) on the ladder to allow for rapid water application, via a nozzle at the end of the ladder, on large or elevated fires. Additionally, a 510 HP Paccar engine, assorted tools, and a 10 kW on board generator round out the compliment of equipment.

Truck 422 responded to its emergency incident on I-95 just after 7 p.m., Monday evening.
