Meet Msituni, a 3-month-old giraffe calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
When she was born, her front legs were bent the wrong way due to a condition called hyperextension of the carpi. This made it almost impossible for her to stand or walk, and without help, her chances of survival would have been very low.
The dedicated wildlife care team at the zoo worked together with specialists from Hanger Clinic, who designed a pair of custom giraffe-patterned braces to support and gently straighten her legs. Msituni also received treatment for other health concerns, including blood abnormalities and her back legs.
Step by step, the little calf grew stronger—first on her right leg, then on her left. After weeks of care and patience, Msituni could finally stand tall, walk with confidence, and eventually run.
And the most heartwarming moment of all, after months of treatment, Msituni rejoined her herd and returned to her mother’s side, where she belongs. 🦒💚
