On 2 August 1990, Fiona Armstrong presented ITN's lunchtime bulletin, just hours after Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait. This pivotal news broadcast covered the shocking onset of the Iraqi invasion ordered by Saddam Hussein, when elite Iraqi Republican Guard divisions launched a sudden attack on Kuwait at around 2:00 am local time, marking the beginning of the Gulf War. The invasion involved coordinated land and air assaults, including helicopter-borne commandos targeting Kuwait City, and resulted in the rapid occupation of the country within two days.
