Leicester’s Golden Mile, a stretch of Belgrave Road, earned its name for the dazzling display of gold jewellery shops, vibrant clothing stores, and restaurants that sprang up in the late 20th century, creating one of the most famous hubs of Indian culture in the UK.

Its origins trace back to the 1960s and 70s, when a significant wave of Indian migration arrived, particularly from East Africa. Many Indians had originally settled in countries like Uganda and Kenya under British colonial rule, but political upheaval - most notably Idi Amin’s 1972 expulsion of Asians from Uganda - forced thousands to seek new homes.

England, and specifically Leicester, became a key destination due to existing community ties and affordable housing.

Over time, these migrants transformed Belgrave Road into a thriving commercial and cultural centre, making it a focal point for Diwali celebrations, traditional cuisine, and Indian enterprise.
