STORYLINE:

The leaders of ten CIS countries gathered at Moscow's central racetrack on Saturday to watch the Russian President's Prize horse race.

Only the Turkmen and Belarussian presidents, Saparmurat Niyazov and Alexander Lukashenko, could not attend the event, the Itar-Tass agency reported.

The remaining leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, watched the racing as security troops kept a careful watch on them.

The heads of Russian regions, who participated in the Russian State Council meeting on Friday, were also invited to the races.

Twelve horses from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan competed for the main prize of three (m) million rubles (100,000 US dollars).
