On September 15th, 1963, four young black girls, aged 11 to 14, were killed when a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Immediately after, police clashed with enraged members of the black community, and at least two other black teens were killed. In 1977, Robert Chambliss, a white supremacist, was convicted in the bombing. Two others were later convicted.
