As students arrive at school and enter your class, they depend on classroom procedures to let them know your expectations at the start of the day. In turn, they also look for end-of-day procedures to help them get closure and move on to the next part of their day. Start and end of day transitions belong in every classroom management plan. Start of day transitions involve students getting their materials, being reminded of rules and routines, and beginning to think about the lesson, perhaps reigniting the content from the day before. This helps to minimize student misbehavior while building student engagement. At the end of the day, procedures for reviewing the day’s lesson, collecting materials, and preparing for homework or the next day’s classwork help students find continuity and purpose in the time spent in your class.

Transitions for the beginning and end of your class are essential for both classroom management and success with your instruction. Students come from different settings, and you cannot assume that they will be ready to learn the moment they arrive. Rehearsing your expectations and having clear procedures for how to start class and what materials they need, as well as where to get them, will help your students quickly adjust. Then, they are more likely to engage with your content, and less likely to be disruptive. Similarly, students need a transition to the end of their day. Without procedures, students can be messy with their supplies and chaotic in their movement. You can reduce end of day anxiety and clock-watching, as well as safety hazards, by establishing and rehearsing transitions for their upcoming departure from class.

A useful beginning of class procedure is Board Teasers. These are short "do now" assignments for the beginning of class. Teachers put a short, fun activity leading into their content up on the board so students see it when they come in and know what to do. This gives students something quiet, productive, and engaging to complete as the teacher greets students at the door. The activity serves as a procedure to help students settle into class and focus, while preparing them for the learning objective.

Students work at different paces, so a Board Teaser could be easy for one student and hard for another. Make sure students know what to do when they finish early, and be ready to assist students who find the Board Teaser challenging so they are not disheartened about your upcoming content. Make sure to abide by time limits so the Board Teaser remains brief and engaging.

1) How can I make sure my Board Teasers are both engaging and related to my content?

2) How can I ensure equal access to this activity for all my students, such as English Language Learners and students with reading problems?

3) How can I use the data collected from these short assignments to inform my teaching?
