Описание к видео TENS UNIT for PAIN explained | How and why to use a TENS Machine

In this video Dr O'Donovan explains what a TENS machine is - which is commonly used for back pain.

What is a TENS Machine?

A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine is a device designed to provide pain relief by sending low-voltage electrical currents through the skin. It works by stimulating the nerves and interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain. This non-invasive, drug-free method is widely used in both clinical and home settings.

What is it Used For?

TENS machines are commonly used to manage chronic and acute pain conditions. They are particularly effective for:

Back Pain: Many individuals use TENS units to alleviate various forms of back pain, including lower back pain, sciatica, and muscle strain. By targeting specific nerve groups, TENS machines can provide significant relief and improve daily function.

Arthritis: TENS can help reduce joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.

Postoperative Pain: Aiding in recovery by reducing pain after surgeries.
Sports Injuries: Useful for managing pain from sprains, strains, and overuse injuries.

Labor Pain: Some women use TENS units during labor for natural pain relief.

Disclaimers

Consultation: Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are pregnant.
Usage: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Incorrect use can lead to skin irritation or ineffective pain relief.
Limitations: TENS machines are not suitable for everyone. People with pacemakers, epilepsy, or certain types of skin conditions should avoid using TENS units.
Pain Management: While TENS machines can help manage pain, they are not a cure for underlying conditions. It’s important to address the root cause of your pain with a healthcare provider.
